After more than 9 inches of rain, Davie closed Lange, Liberty and Oakhill parks, all grass fields and 6 playgrounds, and opened a refuge for horses.

Three Davie parks are closed until further notice because of standing water. Parts of the town have had more than 9 inches of rain since the weekend.

The Town of Davie also closed every grass sports field, canceled all outdoor sports programs and shut six playgrounds. It opened a refuge at Bergeron Rodeo Grounds for horses whose stalls have flooded.

The town gave the rain total in a Flood Safety release at 8:50 a.m. Tuesday. The closures are in its park and trash update for Wednesday, Nov. 4.

Trash pickup

Wednesday’s trash pickup is running as normal. That covers homes on the Wednesday and Saturday garbage schedule and the Zone 3 bulk pickup, which runs the first Wednesday of the month. Collection runs 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The town said Coastal Waste and Recycling will collect as long as crews can do it safely. If the weather turns, garbage and bulk pickup could be canceled at short notice. Our trash and recycling page has the regular schedule.

What the water managers are doing

The town said the Central Broward Water Control District and the South Florida Water Management District are:

  • running spillway gates and pumps to move water away from homes and businesses
  • managing canals so the regional flood control system runs at full capacity
  • moving high-volume pumps into place to clear floodwater from neighborhoods
  • adjusting the system as the weather changes

All pump stations in the area are pumping around the clock, the town said.

More rain Wednesday

The National Weather Service in Miami issued a flood advisory at 7:33 a.m. Wednesday for southern Broward County, until 10:30 a.m. It said 1 to 2 inches of rain had already fallen, with 1 to 2 inches more expected. Davie, Downtown Davie, Pine Island Ridge and Nova Southeastern University were among the places it named.

The weather service’s Davie forecast now looks drier:

  • this afternoon: a 30% chance of showers and storms, high near 84 degrees
  • tonight: a 20% chance of showers, low around 74 degrees
  • Thursday: a slight chance of showers, then sunny, high near 85 degrees

The NOAA gauge on the South Fork New River near Secret Woods Nature Center, about six miles east of central Davie, reached 1.89 feet around 5:30 a.m. Wednesday. The weather service counts anything above 1.7 feet there as moderate flooding. The river is tidal, and the gauge read 1.32 feet, minor flood stage, at 12:54 p.m.

What it means for you

  • Do not drive or walk through standing water. The town said it can hide debris, snakes, broken glass and electrical hazards. Six inches of moving water can knock a person down, and a foot can sweep a car away.
  • Check before you go to a park. The closures above stand until the town says otherwise. Our parks and trails page lists every town park.
  • If your horse’s stall is flooded, register on the town’s form before the refuge fills, and bring your own feed and water.
  • If water comes into your home, the town suggests putting towels along exterior doors to slow it.
  • Get the town’s alerts: text AlertDavie to 888-777 for Everbridge emergency alerts.
  • Clogged storm drains: report them to the Town of Davie at 954-797-1000.
