Mayor Judy Paul won 59.81% and Michelle Whitman and Susan Starkey kept their seats. Alex Barr leads incumbent Marlon Luis in District 4 in unofficial results.

Mayor Judy Paul won a new four-year term Tuesday, and two council members held their seats. In District 4, challenger Alex Barr leads incumbent Marlon Luis by 338 votes.

The figures are unofficial results from the Broward County Supervisor of Elections. The office’s page was last updated at 12:09 a.m. Wednesday. It showed all 346 county precincts reporting, with mail ballots still marked as partially counted. The results stay unofficial until the county canvassing board certifies them.

The town’s elections page says council seats are filled “in accordance with the Town Charter.” It does not say whether a candidate needs a majority to win. We could not reach the charter text online Wednesday. The Town Clerk’s office, 954-797-1023, handles town elections and can confirm what happens next. We will update this story when the result is settled.

District 2 was also due for election this year, the town’s elections page says. No District 2 race appeared on the Supervisor of Elections’ list of candidates (PDF). Daniel J. Alfonso holds that seat, according to the town directory.

The Broward school tax passed

Broward voters also renewed the school district’s one-mill property tax. School Board Question 1 passed with 418,178 votes, or 66.59%, against 209,856, or 33.41%, countywide. It needed a simple majority.

The district said in a statement Wednesday that the tax is expected to raise about $358 million a year. Its referendum page sets out the terms:

  • the levy runs from Jan. 1, 2027, through Dec. 31, 2030, covering four school years from 2027-28
  • about $283 million a year goes to district-run schools and about $75 million to charter schools
  • at least 90% pays pay supplements for teachers and eligible staff
  • up to 10% pays for school resource officers, safety staff and mental health services

This is a renewal, not a new tax. One mill is $1 for every $1,000 of School Board taxable value. The district’s own example is a homeowner with a taxable value of $417,877, who would pay about $418 a year, or $35 a month. Your bill depends on the taxable value the Broward County Property Appraiser sets.
